Salem and the Willamette Valley: windstorm and roof damage claims

By Samuel A. Watson, Licensed Oregon Public Adjuster #22301090 · Sep 14, 2026 · 4 min read

From Salem to Albany, Corvallis, and Eugene, the Willamette Valley's big trees and fall and winter windstorms make roof and tree damage one of the most common property claims in the region. They're also among the most disputed.

Why wind claims get denied

Insurers often call roof damage wear and tear or poor maintenance, which most policies exclude. A properly documented claim ties the damage to a specific storm date, with evidence that fits wind: creased or lifted shingles, missing tabs facing the wind, and debris patterns.

What to document after a storm

  1. Write down the storm date and save weather alerts or news reports that name it.
  2. From the ground, photograph missing shingles, damaged flashing, gutters, and siding. Don't climb onto a damaged roof.
  3. Photograph fallen trees where they landed, before removal, including anything they hit.
  4. Check ceilings and the attic for new stains. Leaks can show up weeks later.
  5. Cover openings with tarps to prevent further damage, and keep the receipts.
Tree removal is its own coverage. Many policies pay to remove a tree only if it hit a covered structure, and often with a low limit. A tree that fell on the lawn may not be covered at all. Read the policy before you assume either way.

Matching and code upgrades

If shingles on one slope can't be matched, you may be owed more than a patch. Your policy and Oregon rules decide that. If the roof has to be rebuilt to current building code, code-upgrade coverage may pay the difference. Both are often missing from the first estimate.

How Titus helps

We inspect the roof ourselves, tie the damage to the storm, and give the insurer a line-item scope that includes matching and code items where your policy covers them. You see our scope before the insurer does.
